Millions of GMO Insects Could Be Released in Florida Keys

Millions of genetically modified mosquitoes could be released in the Florida Keys if British researchers win approval to use the bugs against two extremely painful viral diseases.

Never before have insects with modified DNA come so close to being set loose in a residential U.S. neighborhood.

"This is essentially using a mosquito as a drug to cure disease," said Michael Doyle, executive director of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District, which is waiting to hear if the Food and Drug Administration will allow the experiment.

Dengue and chikungunya are growing threats in the U.S., but some people are more frightened at the thought of being bitten by a genetically modified organism. More than 130,000 people signed a Change.org petition against the experiment.

Even potential boosters say those responsible must do more to show that benefits outweigh the risks of breeding modified insects that could bite people.

"I think the science is fine, they definitely can kill mosquitoes, but the GMO issue still sticks as something of a thorny issue for the general public," said Phil Lounibos, who studies mosquito control at the Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory.

Mosquito controllers say they're running out of options. With climate change and globalization spreading tropical diseases farther from the equator, storm winds, cargo ships and humans carry these viruses to places like Key West, the southernmost U.S. city.

There are no vaccines or cures for dengue, known as "break-bone fever," or chikungunya, so painful it causes contortions. U.S. cases remain rare.

Insecticides are sprayed year-round in the Keys' charming and crowded neighborhoods. But Aedes aegypti, whose biting females spread these diseases, have evolved to resist four of the six insecticides used to kill them.

Enter Oxitec, a British biotech firm that patented a method of breeding Aedes aegypti with fragments of genes from the herpes simplex virus and E. coli bacteria as well as coral and cabbage. This synthetic DNA is commonly used in laboratory science and is thought to pose no significant risks to other animals, but it kills mosquito larvae.

Oxitec's lab workers manually remove modified females, aiming to release only males, which don't bite for blood like females do. The modified males then mate with wild females whose offspring die, reducing the population.

Oxitec has built a breeding lab in Marathon and hopes to release its mosquitoes in a Key West neighborhood this spring.

FDA spokeswoman Theresa Eisenman said no field tests will be allowed until the agency has "thoroughly reviewed all the necessary information."

Company spokeswoman Chris Creese said the test will be similar in size to Oxitec's 2012 experiment in the Cayman Islands, where 3.3 million modified mosquitoes were released over six months, suppressing 96 percent of the targeted bugs. Oxitec says a later test in Brazil also was successful, and both countries now want larger-scale projects.

But critics accused Oxitec of failing to obtain informed consent in the Caymans, saying residents weren't told they could be bitten by a few stray females overlooked in the lab.

Instead, Oxitec said only non-biting males would be released, and that even if humans were somehow bitten, no genetically modified DNA would enter their bloodstream.

Neither claim is entirely true, outside observers say.

"I'm on their side, in that consequences are highly unlikely. But to say that there's no genetically modified DNA that might get into a human, that's kind of a gray matter," said Lounibos.

Creese says Oxitec has now released 70 million of its mosquitoes in several countries and received no reports of human impacts caused by bites or from the synthetic DNA, despite regulatory oversight that encourages people to report any problems. "We are confident of the safety of our mosquito, as there's no mechanism for any adverse effect on human health. The proteins are non-toxic and non-allergenic," she said.

Oxitec should still do more to show that the synthetic DNA causes no harm when transferred into humans by its mosquitoes, said Guy Reeves, a molecular geneticist at Germany's Max Planck Institute.

Key West resident Marilyn Smith wasn't persuaded after Oxitec's presentation at a public meeting. She says neither disease has had a major outbreak yet in Florida, so "why are we being used as the experiment, the guinea pigs, just to see what happens?"

Tell the FDA: Ban the dangerous meat additive ractopamine

Tell the FDA: Ban the dangerous meat additive Ractopamine

If you’ve eaten meat recently, especially pork, you’ve probably ingested food treated with the chemical additive ractopamine, a livestock growth drug so dangerous that 160 countries worldwide have banned it.1

But incredibly, the Food and Drug Administration has continued to approve its use here in the U.S. food supply, endangering livestock, farm workers, and our health.

The safety of our food can’t wait any longer. The FDA must ban this dangerous chemical from our food supply once and for all.

Tell the FDA: Ban the use of ractopamine in our food.

http://act.credoaction.com/sign/ban_ractopamine?t=3&akid=12769.2525263.keaVv1

It’s estimated that up to 80% of all hogs in the U.S. are treated with this dangerous additive,2 yet countries across the globe -- from Asia to the EU -- have banned its use.

In fact, in response to foreign demand for ractopamine-free meat, Smithfield, the world’s largest pork producer, has begun producing livestock without the additive for sale in China. Yet, the company still sells animals fed this unsafe chemical to U.S. markets.3

The effects of this chemical on consumers, livestock, and farm workers are serious. Ractopamine can cause animals to become sick and die, and long-term exposure to humans hasn’t been fully studied.4 What’s more, animals fed this chemical can become agitated, short of breath, stiff, and difficult to handle, putting farm workers at risk.5

The Humane Society, the Center for Food Safety, the United Farm Workers and others have recently filed suit against the FDA to ban this toxic substance from the food supply.6 This is the perfect opportunity to apply even more pressure on the FDA to get this dangerous chemical out of our food.

Tell the FDA: Ban the use of ractopamine in our food.

http://act.credoaction.com/sign/ban_ractopamine?t=3&akid=12769.2525263.keaVv1

Thanks for all you do to keep our food safe.

When Monsanto makes a bad decision, its CEO only answers....to himself!

And the award for Most Evil Company of the Year, based on your votes, goes to… **drumroll**... Monsanto!

This award is well deserved -- this year alone, Monsanto sued a tiny U.S. state for daring to label GMOs, and terrorized Guatemalan farmers because they were saving seeds to plant on their own. And as usual, Monsanto continues to use its massive profits to fund an army of lobbyists, corrupting democratic processes all over the world.

Now, Monsanto is facing a new obstacle -- but this time, from its own shareholders.

A group of SumOfUs members submitted a shareholder resolution demanding change. They want to make Monsanto’s CEO accountable to an independent chair of the board of directors, hopefully preventing even more disastrous decisions without accountability.

Shareholders have just a few days to vote on the proposal in the lead-up to Monsanto’s annual meeting, and the company is throwing everything it can to stop the proposal from passing. We don’t have much time -- ask investors to vote in favor of the proposal now!

Sign the petition asking Monsanto shareholders to demand change at the top.

Monsanto assumes that most of its victims -- especially poor farmers in the Global South -- will never be able to confront it. But together, we can finally hold it accountable.

This is a game-changer. Right now, Monsanto’s CEO is his own boss -- a nifty trick CEOs use to centralize power -- and as long as this structure of impunity continues, Monsanto will continue to jeopardize our resources, our water, land, seeds -- and ultimately, our survival.

Shareholders are sick of Monsanto spending their money on lobbying, campaign contributions, and filing frivolous lawsuits against governments and farmers. They’re already starting to vote on the proposal before Monsanto’s shareholder meeting next week, so we need to get our message to them now while they’re voting.

Sign the petition asking Monsanto shareholders to vote to give the CEO a proper boss, like we all have.

We know our pressure is working. A recent report by The Guardian says Monsanto’s profits dropped by 34% in 2014, and that drop was ascribed to global protests and communities like ours holding it accountable. Undoubtedly, Monsanto’s profits have taken a hit partly thanks to the persistence of the SumOfUs community.

Last year, we delivered over 170,000 signatures at the same shareholder meeting, supporting farmers and investors as they demanded Monsanto be transparent about the risks to GMOs. Tens of thousands of SumOfUs members chipped in to support Vermont against Monsanto’s frivolous lawsuit, and we continue to hold it accountable for terrorizing farmers in Guatemala, Mexico, India and the rest of the world.

If we act now, we could strike a big blow to Monsanto.

We know Monsanto has to listen to its shareholders. And because of this brave group of SumOfUs members and Monsanto shareholders, we have an opportunity to finally force change at Monsanto.
Can you imagine it?! Monsanto being forced to change its shady business practices from the inside!

Help us take the fight to Monsanto’s doorstep: sign the petition asking shareholders to vote in favor of separating the CEO from the chair of the board.

$%@*! this deal! - Two Petitions

President Obama is negotiating two massive trade deals that will put our democracy, food safety, Internet freedoms and access to life-saving medicines in danger. Last night during the State of the Union, along with a slate of progressive ideas, he disturbingly called for a bill that would allow these deals to bypass Congress, forgoing Constitutionally-protected democratic oversight.

World leaders are working alongside major corporations to pass these dangerous deals -- and they are refusing to tell us what’s inside the agreements.

Leaks from the negotiations paint a terrible picture of what the world could be like if these deals pass: sky-high costs for life-saving cancer treatment, further devastation of the world’s poor, and the right for big corporations to sue governments in secret courts for billions -- just for passing laws that protect families, workers and the planet.

With only 4 days to go until the last round of negotiations for one of the deals begins, we need to get access to these texts urgently so we can have an open debate about what promises our government is making about our future.

Use the form on the right to add your name the petition to global leaders to publish the secret draft texts of these trade deals now.

Trade deals used to be about trade -- but now they’re being used as a tool to sneak major changes to our democratic laws and regulatory systems that benefit corporations, and hurt us.

The need to end the secrecy around trade negotiations is more urgent than ever. In 4 days leaders from 12 countries are gathering in New York for the last round of Trans-Pacific Partnership talks ever, to try and finalize this Trojan Horse of a deal -- and they’re hoping to ram the deal through by March. Leaders are also racing to finalize another deal, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), between the EU and United States.

The TPP and TTIP would give corporations the right to sue our government for passing laws that threaten expected profits -- and taxpayers would be forced to pay the fees. And we don’t even know the half of it because the texts of these deals are under lock and key.

It’s not unprecedented for countries to agree to release the text of a deal before it’s final -- it's happened before. Just last week the EU Ombudsman called on the European Commission to publish more documents from the TTIP -- thanks in part to SumOfUs members who submitted comments. With momentum building, this is a key moment to call on our leaders for trade transparency.

It only takes one single country to agree to release the text of one of these agreements to push others to do the same. If enough of us come together now, we can force our leaders to stop negotiating in secret and release the texts once and for all.

Sign the petition to global leaders to stop negotiating in secret and immediately publish the text of the TPP and TTIP agreements?

Global opposition to the TPP and TTIP is growing to a fever pitch. SumOfUs members and allies have been instrumental at raising the profile on these secret trade deals. We’ve showed up outside talks across the world, held demonstrations, snuck inside hotels where negotiations were taking place to distribute flyers to sleeping negotiators, campaigned against elected officials, ran full-page ads in newspapers, and landed dozens of press stories.

Obama is desperate to pass TPP by March to claim credit for the deal during his presidency. Let's make sure this dangerous deal is not part of that legacy.

**********
Further reading:

This secret agreement represents a corporate takeover of government. And nobody knows about it.

The truth is out: the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement represents a Hollywood and Pharma wish-list that would make SOPA-like internet censorship the norm -- all over the world. It's political corruption at it's worst: Our government is doing the bidding of its elite benefactors, and defying the will of the people.

And the US government has kept negotiations over the TPP completely secret.  But WikiLeaks leaked some of the proposal. And it's
terrible news for the public.

They’ve realized they can’t pass legislation like SOPA through the democratic process -- because the people don’t want it -- so they're using the secret treaty process to pass it by other means with corporate interests lining up to have their demands included before the public knows what hit them.

They thought they could keep it all secret until the very last minute, and then force Congress to approve the treaty with no debate, no public oversight, no amendments. But that plan failed.

We know what they're trying to do. And we can stop them. WikiLeaks has taken the first step. A loud public outcry is the only thing that can throw a wrench in their plans to implement secret trade deals that only benefit corporate interests. But we need to act now -- before it's too late.
PETITION TO CONGRESS: The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a treaty designed to serve the interests of massive corporations to the detriment of the world's citizens. It would impose extreme regulations and stifle innovation. I demand that my government oppose this agreement.

      Ohio’s Anti-Green Suicide

Harvey Wasserman | January 20, 2015 9:41 am | Comments Swing state Ohio is plunging ever deeper into the fossil/nuke abyss.

Its Public Utilities Commission may soon gouge the public for $3 billion(BILLION!) to subsidize two filthy 50-year-old coal burners and America’s most dangerous nuke.
Approval would seal Ohio’s death notice.

Ohioans speak out against the $3 billion bailout to subsidize coal plants and the Davis-Besse nuclear plant owned by its unregulated affiliate, FirstEnergy Solutions. Photo credit: Ohio Citizen Action None of those coal/nuke burners can compete with the rising revolution in renewable energy. Throughout the world, similar outmoded facilities are shutting down.

In 2001, Ohio deregulated its electric markets. But the state’s nuke owners demanded nearly $10 billion in “stranded cost” handouts so the obsolete Davis-Besse and Perry reactors on Lake Erie could allegedly compete with more efficient technologies.

Today, despite the huge subsidies, renewables and fracked gas have completely priced them out of the market.

Davis-Besse—a Three Mile Island clone—is infamous worldwide for its horrific breakdowns, including two of the five worst in U.S. history since 1979 as listed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. ….

Tell General Mills: Stop hiding high fructose corn syrup

Tell General Mills: Stop hiding high fructose corn syrup

General Mills’ Vanilla, Chocolate and Cinnamon Chex boxes all proudly display a label that should make many health-conscious consumers happy: “no high fructose corn syrup.”

The only problem: it’s not true.

These General Mills products all contain a super-concentrated sweetener that is made from high fructose corn syrup, and within the Big Ag industry is literally called “HFCS-90” or high fructose corn syrup-90.

But then the Corn Refiners Association changed the name to “fructose.”1 And now General Mills is not only disingenuously hiding their corn syrup behind this innocuous alias – the company is bragging that its products don’t contain any!

We deserve to know what we’re eating. Tell General Mills to stop hiding high fructose corn syrup.

The “fructose” label is especially nefarious, since fructose is a naturally occurring fruit sugar, and HFCS-90 is a highly concentrated, highly processed product that is molecularly different from the fructose you would eat in your apple.

The corn industry waves away HFCS-90 as a minor ingredient, stating “HFCS-90, is sometimes used in natural and 'light' foods, where very little is needed to provide sweetness.” But that’s clearly not the case. According to the label, there is actually more HFCS-90 in Cinnamon Chex than there is actual cinnamon!2

Tell General Mills: Stop hiding high fructose corn syrup.

Clearly General Mills is eager to make its claims, as many consumers are increasingly avoiding high fructose corn syrup over health concerns.

The drastic increase of this cheap sugar replacement in the past 40 years has coincided with skyrocketing rates of obesity, diabetes and other metabolic diseases. And while the science is still emerging, a number of studies – including one just released from the University of Utah3 – have found evidence that high fructose corn syrup is more toxic than sucrose, or traditional sugar.

Or course, both sugar and high fructose corn syrup are unhealthy in large amounts. But making healthy choices starts with understanding what we are eating. And as long as companies like General Mills are not only changing the names of ingredients, but also flat-out lying on the front of the box, informed choices are that much harder.

General Mills is sensitive to our pressure. The company was recently forced to stop labeling products containing synthetic ingredients as “natural.” With our pressure, we can force the company to come clean about products containing high fructose corn syrup.4

Tell General Mills: Stop hiding high fructose corn syrup.

Sleep and Sleep Disorders

While we often consider sleep to be a “passive” activity, sufficient sleep is increasingly being recognized as an essential aspect of health promotion and chronic disease prevention in the public health community.

Insufficient sleep is associated with a number of chronic diseases and conditions—such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and depression—which threaten our nation’s health. Notably, insufficient sleep is associated with the onset of these diseases and also poses important implications for their management and outcome. Moreover, insufficient sleep is responsible for motor vehicle and machinery-related crashes, causing substantial injury and disability each year. In short, drowsy driving can be as dangerous—and preventable—as driving while intoxicated.

More than one-quarter of the U.S. population report occasionally not getting enough sleep, while nearly 10% experience chronic insomnia. However, new methods for assessing and treating sleep disorders bring hope to the millions suffering from insufficient sleep. Fundamental to the success of all of these efforts is the recognition that sufficient sleep is not a luxury—it is a necessity—and should be thought of as a “vital sign” of good health.

These stories make it clear that it's possible to miss danger signs and that social drinking can become problem drinking, which in turn can evolve into addiction. Big Oil Giveaways

Peace Action: Working for Peace Since 1957

Far too often, Congressional representatives say, "the government is broke" as they cut vital public services and continue to dole out 53% of annual discretionary spending to the Pentagon and huge subsidies to Big Oil.  And 2015 looks like we are in for a real battle on national spending priorities.
We need to send them a message about the social spending we need and the corporate welfare for Big Oil and defense contractors we don’t.
For over a century, special tax breaks for oil and gas companies have been on the books—and over the next decade they could cost taxpayers as much as $100 billion.
Did you know that in 2014 these Big Oil subsidies could have bought 1.1 million Pell grants? Or 200,000 Park Rangers? Or healthcare for 2.1 million combat veterans?
Our communities and, countries around the world, are paying the price for distorted national spending priorities and wars for control of oil.
The reason for all this free money isn’t a mystery. Last November, the Koch brothers spent millions to purchase the best Congress their dirty oil money could buy. In fact, in this past election cycle, the oil and gas industry alone spent more than $50 million to elect industry champions and climate deniers.
This explains why government programs that feed the hungry and heal the sick must struggle for funding, while billions of our tax dollars are still being sent to Big Oil in the form of tax subsidies and other special interest giveaways. And why the waste in the Pentagon budget goes unchecked.

Sign the Petition to CVS

CVS is supporting the plunder of Antarctica and one of the last unspoiled oceans on the planet.

The pharmacy giant is marketing and selling Antarctic krill oil as a health supplement -- vacuuming krill in vast quantities from the Antarctic oceans and pumping them into pills. It’s putting the entire Antarctic ecosystem at risk, and we can stop it.

Krill are tiny crustaceans (they look a lot like miniature shrimp), but they represent a giant link in the Antarctic food chain. A new SumOfUs report shows that krill numbers are crashing, endangering the survival of hundreds of marine creatures like whales, penguins and seals.

The only way these companies will stop is if there’s no market for Antarctic wildlife on our shelves. That’s why we’re targeting CVS -- if we can get this major retailer to refuse to sell krill-killing supplements, we can stop fishing companies from destroying the Antarctic.

Will you sign on and tell CVS to stop stocking Antarctic krill-based omega-3 health supplements and save one of the last unspoiled oceans on earth?

CVS stocks krill-based products by MegaRed and other companies, as well as selling its own, home brand krill oil. CVS claims that their krill products are sustainable, but the claim doesn't stand up to scrutiny. In fact, only some of its krill products are certified. And leading environment groups including Greenpeace and Pew Environment Group have long objected to the certification of krill fishing, saying that it "falsely advertises the message that all krill are sustainably caught and that consuming krill-based omega 3 supplements ... is okay. Nothing could be further from the truth."

The krill population is vital, but it’s depleting fast. Research shows krill populations have already dropped by 80 percent since the 1970s. What’s also shocking is that Antarctic penguin populations, which depend on krill for food, have collapsed by 50 percent in the last 30 years.

Krill are on the front lines of climate change -- melting sea ice is destroying their habitat, and ocean acidification could further harm them. And at the same time, krill also play a key role in slowing global warming, as they transport carbon dioxide from the surface to the deep water.

Yet krill fishing is a lucrative industry -- seafood companies use mammoth vessels equipped with new technology that literally vacuum the pristine Antarctic ocean, sucking up krill in massive volumes. It’s one of the last fish stocks that hasn’t been plundered to near extinction -- but it might not stay that way for long.

But it doesn’t have to be like this -- we can eat and protect our health without it being so costly to the Earth. Omega-3 health supplements can be produced from plant-based inputs or from fisheries that are sustainably harvested.

Fishing companies won’t stop pillaging the Antarctic unless we show them that there’s no longer demand for these products. Putting pressure on well-known retailers is the best way we can stop the depletion of the krill population. By disrupting demand and getting rid of this market, we can make retailers put the environment over profits.

At SumOfUs, we've done this before, and we've won. Last year we got retailers like Zara, ASOS, and Topshop to stop using angora fur from bunnies having their fur cruelly ripped out for clothes. And we’ve pushed major companies like Kellogg’s to stop destroying the rainforest to produce palm oil.

This is what we’re doing again -- targeting CVS, a public-facing corporation, so we can curb the demand for Antarctic krill, and stop the collapse of the entire Antarctic marine ecosystem.
Tell CVS to stop selling krill-based omega-3 health supplements now.

Help decide what's next for FPA

This year presents unique challenges and opportunities for the food movement as we confront the new Congress and push ahead on important issues related to the food we eat and produce.
Your advocacy on a host of issues has played a key role in holding our leaders accountable for their votes on food. Now, we want to hear what you think our priorities should be in 2015.
Without our grassroots supporters, FPA couldn’t have made the kind of incredible progress we saw last year.
By making our voices heard, we can change how our leaders vote on issues like GMO labeling, antibiotics in food, and local farming.
Thanks for being a part of this.

We Are Change

Forbes

Most parents would be concerned if their children had significant exposure to lead, chloroform, gasoline fumes, or the pesticide DDT.  The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IRIC), part of the United Nations’ World Health Organization (WHO), classifies these and more than 250 other agents as Class 2B Carcinogens – possibly carcinogenic to humans.  Another entry on that same list is radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF/EMF).  The main sources of RF/EMF are radios, televisions, microwave ovens, cell phones, and Wi-Fi devices.

Uh-oh. Not another diatribe about the dangers of our modern communication systems?  Obviously, these devices and the resulting fields are extremely (and increasingly) common in modern society.  Even if we want to, we can’t eliminate our exposure, or our children’s, to RF/EMF.  But, we may need to limit that exposure, when possible.

That was among the conclusions of a report published in the Journal of Microscopy and Ultrastructure entitled “Why children absorb more microwave radiation than adults: The consequences.”  From an analysis of others studies, the authors argue that children and adolescents are at considerable risk from devices that radiate microwaves (and that adults are at a lower, but still significant, risk).  The following points were offered:

Texting and Driving Prevention: 5 Seconds

http://www.stoptextsstopwrecks.org

A texting driver is 23 times more likely to get into a crash than a non-texting driver.

This campaign targets young adult drivers with a focus on texting and driving prevention. Young adults live in a connected world where multitasking is the norm. This manifests in the car where they recognize texting and driving is dangerous, but do it anyway.

The average text takes a driver's eyes off the road for nearly five seconds. When traveling at 55mph, that's enough time to cover the length of a football field. The message being conveyed is that texting while driving isn't multitasking, it's essentially driving blind.
